Just when we thought we had seen it all from Washington artist Salem Straub, he doubles down on an iconic damascus pattern of his design, and takes it to the next level for his latest heirloom chef knife. Salem begins by creating the newest rendition of his Spawn Chains pattern in which minute layers of steel can be seen within each link. The dark, foreboding canvas on which they lay includes bars of 1080 high-carbon steel from more than one smelting, resulting in a ghostly alloy-banding effect in the darkened backdrop like we have not witnessed before. An, prior to forging the blade itself, the final step of the artistic patterning was to feather the material, resulting in the jaw-dropping finished product seen here. Ensuring the artwork is as functional and performative as it is visually stunning, Salem then hones the 247mm / 9.8″ blade with his well-loved compound ‘S-grind’ bevel geometry that produces as versatile and dynamic a blade as a chef could want: tall, tough, and powerful in the rear, becoming progressively thinner and more flexible moving forward. The rounded spine and choil paired with a gently sculpted integral bolster through which the feathered damascus courses offer comfort when cutting in the pinch grip. For any grip style, and for looks that will turn heads everywhere this knife cuts, the handle is then completed with a combination of black G10 which forms the frame, set with heirloom-fit inlays of silver twill carbon fiber. The top face of the handle is engraved with both Salem’s maker’s mark, and an interlocking chain design to complement the extraordinary damascus.
