Grasp this extraordinary tool in the hand and experience a feeling as sweet as honey. The luscious sensation, though, comes not without the knowledge that the sting of the bee that makes the honey can be waiting just around the corner. With the same patience and respect with which the beekeeper cares for their bees, artist and bladesmith Joshua Prince nurtures the steel and honey-like Ultem which become at once both razor-sharp tool, and sculptural art. At his studio in Rhode Island, the build begins with Joshua forging a single piece of skewed, checkerboard pattern stainless damascus stee of his designl to form the blade, integral bolster, and tang of this chef’s knife. In AEB-L and 154CPM high-performance stainless alloys merged to form the damascus, Joshua’s exploration of the possibilities in this elusive material (i.e. stainless steel damascus), continue. To squeeze every drop of utility from the striking material, Joshua hones bevel geometry to envy: symmetrical, compound ‘S-grind’ bevels enjoy a tall, hollow section from the spine downward to around the half-inch mark where they become convex, slimming from that point to the thin, hard, and razor-sharp edge. The blade’s spine, wide and tough, tapers steadily forward to a quite slim, needle-like tip. Versatile and balanced in every sense, this is a knife to do it all. For comfort, control, and a head-turning effect that allows the tang’s damascus pattern to be viewed through the honey-inspired handle scales, the translucent material forms a grip, together with the heirloom fit integral bolster, that is both rewardingly tactile and ergonomic. A series of stainless steel pins secure the food-grade thermoplastic to the stainless damascus to complete a work of culinary art unlike any before it.
