Inspired by the art of Gerhard Richter, the German painter who experimented with the concept of dividing and recompiling an abstract work along its vertical axis, is a damascus pattern and its ensuing transformation into a one-of-a-kind chef knife by bladesmith Jayden Simisky. The pattern of contrasting carbon alloys that forms the blade is a beautiful, metallic representation of the Richter style, the dense, undulating yet still parallel lines of nickel-rich 15n20 standing out on a backdrop of dark, 1084 carbon steel filling as much of the canvas as possible toward the edge, yet providing a mere outline of the corresponding space toward the blade’s spine, with a center line that leads the eye from choil to tip. Forged by hand at his Boulder, Colorado studio, Jayden has formed a 205mm / 8.1″ chef’s profile designed for all manner of daily meal prep, the hard, sharp, and thin edge balancing finesse and strength beautifully, while the spine slims to an extremely slim, needle-like tip for precision work, balancing the strong, sturdy, 59mm-tall heel that is ideal for chopping even the largest and densest ingredients. To begin a comfortable, ergonomic, and striking handle Jayden’s ‘X Marks the Spot’ mosaic damascus pattern forms forge-welded integral bolsters that wrap around the tang of the blade’s Richter pattern. To complete a culinary tool destined for greatness, with stepped-down, heirloom fit-up, the damascus bolsters converge with a breathtaking piece of Hawaiian Koa sculpted into a handsome, hand-hugging profile.
