When makers, metalsmiths, and damascus artists Tobbe Lundström and Mattias Styrefors combine forces, the results are always extraordinary. Based in Åre, Sweden, knifemaker Tobbe is known by chef’s the world over for bringing together materials originating in his home country, from the blade’s Damasteel stainless damascus made in Söderfors, to the found reindeer antler and spruce wood, to the mosaic damascus bolsters from Mattias’ shop in Sweden’s far north. This piece, a chef’s slicing knife designed for both kitchen and dining room applications, offers a 270mm / 10.7″ blade in Fafnir pattern Damasteel, a twisted pattern with mesmerizing, tight lines. Tobbe provides a razor-sharp edge below convex bevels, and a distal taper along the spine that leads to a fine, pointed tip. And the art does not end there. Mattias, a renowned damascus artist, provides Polar Bear carbon steel bolsters to begin a handle as beautiful as the knife itself. Beyond the hand-forged bolsters, with heirloom fit-up, comes a ring of fossilized mammoth tooth followed by spruce burl with its striking grain secured by a single mosaic pin. Included with this one-of-a-kind creation is a handmade saya shaped from reclaimed barn siding complete with leather, steel, and mammoth tooth pin.
