Over 350 years of bladesmithing and metallurgy expertise as one of Japan’s longest-running blacksmith shops reaches extraordinary heights with the Fantasy Line by Nigara Hamono. This single-bevel sakimaru sujihiki blade represents the pinnacle of the shop’s offerings, a culinary object as rare and exquisite as any in the world. The Nigara family began forging steel in the early Edo period, producing swords for the Tsugaru clan, and today it is run by the 7th-generation Mr. Toshiju Yoshizawa, and his son, the 8th-generation lead blacksmith Go Yoshizawa. This one-of-a-kind tool is designed for sashimi preparation by a right-handed chef, the long, slim edge and gently curved sakimaru-style tip made for cutting in one fluid motion in order to preserve the cellular structure of the fish. The hand-forged blade is constructed from a san-mai (three-layer) formula consisting of an edge in densely layered White No.2 and Blue No.2 carbon steels, with lightly etched damascus cladding of Go’s design and making. The blade comes without handle so that the owner can select the style, materials, and shape of their preference.
