The first tool to grace our collection by artist and bladesmith Toma Fenes is a paring knife that just begs to be used. At 19 years old, Toma has already been building with his hands for the better part of a decade, and forging metal for years. With a thin, hard, and sharp 100mm / 4.3″ edge in the prized 26c3 ‘Spicy White’ carbon steel, this differentially hardened, honyaki blade presents a beautiful hamon line along the superbly shaped, convex blade bevels. Slim yet strong in all of the right places, the blade is crafted to perform every cut where a parer-size cutting tool is ample, the rounded, polished spine tapering steadily and evenly from 3.6mm above the heel to barely 1mm an inch from the pointed, needle-like tip. A short, wide, and forge-finished blade tang disappears into a wa handle of an aquamarine burl, together forming a parer that offers excellent balance and the ability to function as efficiently above the board for handheld work and peeling as on the board for slicing and detailing carving jobs. As elegantly and comfortably shaped as the blade is the handle sculpted with a combination of facets, curves, and subtle, hand-hugging swells. A handmade saya is included.
