Newly minted at the Lynn Valley Forge studio of bladesmith Casey Vilnesky is a one-of-a-kind Chinese-style vegetable cleaver, the latest work of art from this wildly talented North Vancouver artist. The 221mm long, 93mm tall blade forged with integral bolster handle construction begins with two elements: a dark edge bar of 1084 carbon steel, and a piece of Turkish Twist pattern mosaic damascus steel as exquisite and detailed as any we have seen. A thin, razor-sharp, and hard edge is designed to move effortlessly through ingredients aided by Casey’s subtly convex bevel geometry and the overall weight and forward-leaning balance of the tool. To control the purposefully designed knife weighing just over 16oz / 474g, or one full pound, is a comfortable, handsome handle which boasts pale moon ebony, a wide spacer of fossilized mammoth tooth, and a flush, polished brass retention bolt cap that secures the elements together for generations of chefs to enjoy. To hold this object is to be transported to a world where food is everything and cooking is all that there is.
