Sculpted by the most skilled craftspeople of the Ishikawa Prefecture, known for its extraordinary lacquerware for hundreds of years, using Yamanaka techniques for turning and finishing the Japanese betula grossa wood, these sake glasses are like no other. The tatekidori technique of preparing the raw material by using pieces cut across the longitudinal grain allows the artisan to produce the most slender stems, precisely formed feet, and an elegant, slim bowl with glass-thin lip. The approach also allows the natural grain to shine beautifully while resulting in a long-lasting, functional work that will resist distortion over time. In natural and black finishes, each cup is sealed using the traditional fukiurushi lacquer technique which involves multiple steps of rubbing and wiping lacquer from the surface of the object. Designed by Masaharu Asano, the Tohka Sake Cup will be a treasured work of functional art in any home.
