The process begins with a select piece of local cherry wood. Austrian woodworker Maximilian Neukäufler then begins shaping the object, first with a small hatchet, then with handheld, analog carving tools using traditional techniques, leaving marks at every step that tell the story of the tool’s hand-hewn origins. Max’s SideWinder design is part serving spoon, part spatula, a versatile utensil that can play equal roles in the kitchen and dining room. To complement the wood’s beautiful grain, Max finishes the handle with a wabi-sabi coating of acrylic, forest-green paint. The feeling in the hand of a one-of-a-kind heirloom creation by this talented artist is not soon forgotten.
