To conjure the spirit and energy of The Asteroid Belt’s magnificence, artist and knife sculptor Tristan Dare forges a one-of-a-kind chef knife as unique and extraordinary as this Galaxy which houses each. A mosaic of iron-based alloys, both terrestrial and extraterrestrial in origin, form a 235mm / 9.3″ blade that is not only exquisite in form, but also shaped, hardened, and sharpened with care and precision for use in the hands of the chef. To create the blade, Tristan developed a damascus pattern of his own design using 1084 and 15n20 carbon alloys, then went on to formulate a distinct and separate steel at his studio which includes raw iron derived directly from the Muonionalusta meteorite. Before being discovered in Scandinavia in 1906 near the border of Sweden and Finland, the Muonionalusta is thought to have traveled through the solar system at fantastic speed for over 4.56 billion years before impacting Earth approximately one million years ago. This makes the makes the Muonionalusta, like another ingredient in this stunning work of art, older than Earth itself. Forged by hand under pressure using heat and experience, Tristan combines and twists the two inputs, the pattern-welded damascus and his Stardust meteorite alloy, into a constellation that sees the bright, speckled pieces of meteorite running the length of the blade along edge and spine, with the chaotic and energetic damascus flowing between. Like a belt through the vastness of space. Embellishing the iron-based elements is another as old as the Muonionalusta, believed to have formed in spectacular supernovae and neutron star collisions that pre-date our solar system: gold. Adorning the blade as well as the striking, and comfortable, forged iron handle, Tristan lays pure, 24k gold atop steel for an other-worldly aesthetic. To display the Iron Stardust Meteorite Chef, the artist has forged a custom vertical stand using the same iron from which the knife’s handle is sculpted.
