With tentacles reaching outward from the forged integral bolster into the deepest depths, this Joshua Prince work of edged art represents one of three blades created from the collaborative damascus steel devised and crafted by Joshua along with bladesmiths Charlie Ellis and Nick Anderson. This trio of world-class makers converged on Nick’s studio in Oakland, California in Spring of 2022 to design and construct the stunning, mollusk-inspired damascus pattern of which they dreamt. After an intensive week of daily morning-to-night work carefully formulating and forging the patterned steel together, Joshua departed Oakland for his Rhode Island studio, with him a piece of the coveted material from which he would craft a one-of-a-kind knife. This blade is the result of those collective efforts. Standing 70mm tall at the heel and extending forward with 245mm of thin, hard, razor-sharp edge, the blade tapers beautifully from bolster to tip to create a versatile, dynamic cutting tool for the chef’s kitchen. A rounded spine, stiff in the rear and with a touch of lateral flexibility in the final inches, culminates at a paper-thin tip ideal for detail work and precision slicing. The temper and etch of the steel reveals the Nautilus pattern’s spectacular details in a dark, sultry, matte finish along the subtly convex primary bevels. Softly sculpted and tapering from back to front, the integral bolster is comfortable and elegant, meeting a piece of carved maple burl that offers comfort and control on the cutting board. Balanced at the blade’s heel, this full-size kitchen workhorse is equal parts tool and art. Form and function at its finest from one of the best in the world.
