Australian artist James Oatley’s contribution to The Art of Cutlery, a knife named “Siren,” on show during summer 2024 in Tribeca, NYC, combines elegance in form with boldness and beauty of being, to sing the song of the Siren to all who venture near. Shaped from small-batch stainless damascus steel in classic Japanese tanto form designed for slicing and serving in the dining room, the blade bares James’s meticulous geometry including a concave fuller along the spine. A traditional, copper habaki wraps the base of the blade. The handle, and matching saya, when together, form a seamless seascape, each encrusted with crushed abalone shell and gold flake. Siren is presented on a wooden stand. This knife is razor-sharp and crafted for culinary use.
