Turari Ripple Bowl

Tsurari in Japanese means lining up in a row. It is with hundreds of years of inherited knowledge that the skilled craftspeople of the Yamanaka Onsen area attain the decorative, turned lacquerware style seen in these beautiful Turari Ripple Bowls designed by Atsushi Sakai. Inspired by the region’s past generations of artists, such as Heibei Minoya, a master of itomebiki, an advanced decorative turning style, each Gato Mikio object since its founding in 1908 upholds the storied history of lacquerware in the region. With its wiped transparent lacquer finish, the striking water betula grossa wood, commonly known as the Japanese Cherry Birch, presents its grain inside and out in wonderful fashion. This happens by design: the dark brown stain, polyurethane finish, and the woods cross-cut origins, a technique known as tatekidori that uses wood cut across the longitudinal grain, a hallmark of Gato Mikio quality, are to thank. To hold in the hand or rest on the dining table, each Turari bowl is crafted meticulously to serve those in the home day and night.
